Protection of endangered species

The active volcano of La Soufrière and the central mountain range are great sources of biodiversity. A remarkable number of plant and animal species, some of them highly endangered, such as the St. Vincent Parrot – the Amazona Guildingi – reside there.

The banana industry and its heavy dependence on chemicals to control the various diseases, has meant that the bird life on SVG has become very poor. Birds like the hummingbird, which used to be very common are now rare birds.

Throughout the country various species are being placed at risk because of threats to their natural habitat. The SVGPF will support projects that seek to rescue species that are endangered and also to restore their habitats.
